Celebrate Navaratri according to science of Spirituality

The Navaratri commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin. During this vowed religious observance, a pot is installed (ghatasthapana) in a sanctified place at home. A lamp is kept lit in the pot for nine days. The pot symbolizes the universe. The uninterrupted lit lamp is the medium through which we worship the effulgent Adishakti, i.e. Sree Durgadevi. During Navaratri, the principle of Sree Durgadevi is more active in the atmosphere. When we understand the spiritual science behind the various rites that come under the worship of Sree Durgadevi, we become worthy of absorbing more of the Divine energy principle, thereby acquiring more of Her grace.

Navaratri: Night indicates 'switch over in the process'. one of the Goddess's names is Kalratri. Kalratri is one who brings about changes in the Kalpurush. Earth's basic nature is to rotate. Due to this rotation, changes like night and day occur. Vowed observances (vrat) help the body adjust to the changes. To reduce the tama gun, Goddess Mahakali is worshipped during the first 3 days of Navaratri. In the next 3 days Satvaguni Goddess Mahalaxmi is worshipped to increase the satva gun. And during the last 3 days of navaratri Rajoguni Goddess Maha Saraswati is worshipped to increase the intensity of our spiritual practice.

Holi: The Festival of Colors

Rituals and Customs :

Holi is spread out over two days (it used to be five, and in some places it is longer). On the evening of the first day of Holi, a public bonfire is held, commemorating the burning of Holika. Traditionally, Hindu boys spend the weeks prior to Holi combing the neighborhood for any waste wood they can find for the bonfire. The fire is lit sometime between 10 PM and midnight (at the rising of the moon), not generally in an orderly fashion. Everyone gathers in the street for the event, and the air rings with shouts, catcalls, curses and general mayhem.

Mythological Significance :

Hiranyakashipu was the king of demons, and he had been granted a boon by Brahma, which made it almost impossible for him to be killed. The boon was due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed 'during day or night; inside the home or outside; not on earth or on sky, neither by a man nor an animal'. Consequently, he grew arrogant, and attacked the Heavens and Earth. He demanded that people stop worshipping gods and start praying to him. But his own son, Prahlad, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. In spite of several threats from Hiranyakashipu, Prahlad continued offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.

He was poisoned but the poison turned to nectar in his mouth. He was ordered to be trampled by elephants yet remained unharmed. He was put in a room with hungry, poisonous snakes and still survived. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as the shawl flew from Holika, who, then was burnt to death, while Prahlad survived without a scar to show for it, after the shawl moved on to cover him. The burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.

Regional Celebrations :

Each area celebrates Holi differently; the Bhil tribesmen of western Madhya Pradesh, who've retained many of their pre-Hindu customs, celebrate holi in a unique way. In rural Maharashtra State, where the festival is known as Rangapanchami it is celebrated with dancing and singing. In the towns of Rajasthan especially Jaisalmer the music's great, and clouds of pink, green, and turquoise powder fill the air. The grounds of Jaisalmer's Mandir Palace are turned into chaos, with dances, folk songs, and colored-powder confusion.

Good Things To Know About The Caribana Festival

The city of Toronto in Ontario, Canada is the annual host of a festival dedicated to the Caribbean culture and traditions, called Caribana. Every summer, this Carnival-style event on the lakeshore of Toronto gathers hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. It is quite obvious why it has slowly become North America's largest street festival. It is being held in Toronto from mid-July until the first week of August.

The Caribbean Cultural Committee (CCC) is the nonprofit organization that runs most of the events during the Caribana Festival. The over 1 million people that visit Toronto during the events bring in over $300 million to the Canadian economy.

The main event is a big street parade, that gathers costumed dancers and live Caribbean music.

Let us linger a bit upon these mysterious styles that the Caribbean music charmes us with.

I shall start with Calypso, or Kaiso, a distant relative of Jazz, Blues, Dub and Rap. Calypso is the one to express an opinion about everyday life. Being a combination of Soul and Calypso, Soca is the most familiar Carnival party music, that has a more recent variant: Rapso, made up of Dub, Rap and Calypso.

Born from the celebration of the emancipation by the freed slaves in Trinidad, Canboulay stands for the commemorated times of fire in the canefields.

The Steel Pan style has evolved from the only new acoustic musical
Instrument that Trinidad and Tobago gave the 20th century.

The Caribana has its King and Queen of the Bands Competition, as each theme group in the parade is a "band" that consists of a live
musical group and masqueraders in costumes that play a certain role in the scene. This is what "Mas" player stands for. One of the most interesting things in the carnival is the painted devil costume, called "Jab", from the French diable.

Since Trinidad and Tobago have decided to meet the efforts of Toronto regarding the Caribana Festival, numerous industries and sectors benefit from the collaboration: Toronto's tourism product, the hotels, airlines, transport services and caterers, not to speak about the business community in Toronto.

Foreign holidays

Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels recognises the importance of family time together. It has 22 resorts in UK, Spain, Tenerife and Austria where the focus is fully on family fun, from the activities programmes around the poolside and its on resort 'Team Marina' for kids, to organised excursions. Resorts are totally family-friendly with well-equipped self-catering accommodation, as well as restaurants on site, impeccable housekeeping and maintenance.

Safety and health are also priorities. A doctor's surgery is located in the grounds of its multiple resorts on the Costa del Sol and considerable investment is made in security. It is also the only timeshare company in Europe to be BSI audited to quality standard ISO9000:20001 for Marina del Sol Management S.L.U. at four of its resorts, with plans to achieve this throughout its entire operation.

"We are committed to exceeding the expectations of our 50,000 member families and all staff are encouraged to go that extra mile to ensure the experience is memorable for all the right reasons," said Richard Fletcher, Resorts Management Director. "When families have saved all year to come on their annual holiday together, we have an obligation to ensure they have the best time ever."

Catering for families' needs has made a huge contribution to Club La Costa's success since it was first formed in 1984, with more family-style resorts planned for Spain and Turkey as part of its ambitious expansion programme over the next two years.

However, it is also recognised that in addition to their main family holiday, members opt for other short breaks, often with friends. This can apply to groups of golfing mates, or other shared interests, and adults simply wanting quality time by themselves.

A survey among a nationally representative sample of 1,847 people in the UK over the age of 16, carried out by Tickbox.net, discovered 27 per cent take short breaks with friends and 10 per cent admitted they do it for time away from their partner and/or family.

Almost 50 per cent of those surveyed preferred to take a break in the British countryside. Club La Costa's UK resorts all enjoy tranquil rural settings. They include the splendid Duchally Country Estate in the heart of Scotland. With its five-star standard leisure centre and proximity to top class golf courses, including Gleneagles, trout and salmon waters, clay pigeon shooting, Scottish whisky distilleries... it's an obvious short-break choice.

Valentine's Day Reminds Us to Appreciate Those We Love

Heart-shaped boxes full of candy. Red and pink cards. Roses. Bags of chocolate kisses and hard candies that say, "Be mine." Advertisements for diamonds in all sizes, shapes and forms. It's hard to forget the fact that Valentine's Days is upon us once again. Valentine's Day represents a wonderful opportunity to tell those we care about the most how we truly feel about them and reminds us that we really should be doing this every day of the year. It's amazing how a small expression of love and appreciation can improve a relationship, but many of us forget this little bit of relationship advice. For this reason, for most couples Valentine's Day offers a great chance to recommit to truly appreciating and loving each other.

If you are newly in love, you likely express your feelings both verbally and physically often and shower your partner with flowers and love-laced poems, cards and gifts on a regular basis. Valentine's day represents just one more opportunity to do more of the same. That's one of the reasons that new relationships thrive - the partners are so focused on showing their love and appreciation for each other.

If you are in a long-term relationship, however, you might more often forget to say "I love you" or to show your spouse or significant other on a regular basis that he or she is appreciated and adored. In other words, you might not appreciate your partner or spouse - or show that appreciation even if you feel it. Such couples should celebrate Valentine's even if they don't feel like it, because it's a great reminder and opportunity to express their love and to show their appreciation outwardly for those deep down inside they care about most - even if they no longer realize it.

If you are stuck in a relationship rut, Valentine's Day can serve as the beginning of a new "love and appreciation" campaign that last not just for 24 hours but all year long - in fact, all relationship long. Instead of making February 14th a Hallmark holiday - one that simply involves the purchasing of a card and a gift - you can make it the first day that you commit to revving up the romance in your relationship and in your life. You can spend time and energy remember and expressing all the reasons why you first loved and appreciated your partner, and then you can watch how the relationship heats up.

Just like an anniversary or a retaking of wedding vows, Valentine's day can be a time when couples say, "I'd marry you all over again." Or it can be a time to look back over the years and remember both the good and the bad times, the easy and the hard times, and to be grateful they weathered them all together.

Since Valentine's Day does only come once a year, remember to show your appreciation and gratitude for those you love on a regular basis. It's so easy to forget to say "thank you" and "I really appreciate it when you do that" and "I love you." Learn to shower your partner with gratitude so he or she always feels loved and appreciated. Don't wait for a special day like Valentine's Day. Do it every day. Your partner will love you for it. And your love will grow because of it.
