What a great Mela, the atmosphere was excellent, I love Bangla New Year now , for sure and what a perfect time to party.

The music was jumping, punctuated by low flying MTV style cameras, the coverage was a success, the audience Baishakhi Mela
going mental, the musicians gave it back with excellent performances.

If a Mela is gauged by how well people enjoy themselves then Baishakhi Mela is really not to be missed, there is a real feeling of community and independence, which is fair enough, although, there is also a feeling of being in someone else's house, more so than other Melas.

There is no true cross-over, no sense of inclusion with rest of the whole community of East London, no multi-cultural element that makes a good Mela a great one.

Channel S put up a good show, the TV coverage was decent with a large viewing screen so no one missed any of the action on stage.

The presenter was constantly swamped with people trying to get their faces on the screen, but he seemed to handle the crush with some humour (at least when the cameras were on ) some of the crowd were generous enough to form a circle around him and the show went on.

A few other TV companies also showed up, but it was a token
representation and they didn't have the same enthusiasm as Channel S..

Four girls on a perfect California 2 wk. vacation and just lucky enough to have found this little gem of a hotel for a 3 night stay while in Hollywood. The pic's on the internet do not do this place justice and it sure deserves at least a 4 star rating. We were pleasantly surprised with our room which had 2 king beds in 2 rooms and a full kitchenette and dining area. Very clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Continental brkfst. was the best I have ever had with lots of variety. Situated right behind the Kodak theatre and within 3 hrs. of our arrival we saw several big stars as there was a Sean Connery lifetime achievement celebration at the theatre and were able to get very close for a lot of fun photos. While strolling along the Hollywood walk of fame we found an amazing little place called Venice Pizza + Deli @ 6603 Hollywood Blvd. where we believe the best pasta and pizza we have ever eaten and also the best waitress named Rachel who we just adored and was only to happy to take care of our every request. This is the perfect hotel for those who want to be in the thick of the action only having to walk or take a short cab ride to everything you could possibly want to see or do. I will definately be back in the future and will not need to look any further that this hotel and the prices were very reasonably. One more thing, if you go on a tour you should definately try the Starline Tour and get Brian Donnelly for your guide, I promise you won't be disappointed he is the best!

This hotel is a charming throwback to another time which immediately causes one to take a deep breath and become quite calm and relaxed. Colors of India (Virtual Holi) is theme number two of the events lined up on the sun calendar of the internationally collaborative Solar Eclipse'99 project. This is a project about using computing technology to connect up communities located in different parts of the world. The aim will be to interact, exchange, share ideas and work together through synchronous networking, in spite of the participating members being separated by huge physical distances.

This event that was scheduled for the evening of the13th(Friday) March was designed around playing virtual holi through the information technologies with other countries from around the world. As part of our "new audiences"( which for us would imply those not involved yet or likely to be involved in the conceivable future, in any way whatsoever, to these technologies.), we had with us a painter Jitish Kallat and six street children from YUVA(Youth Unity for Voluntary Action) who painted on the theme of the festival. The interesting outcome of this being that Kallat created a digital canvas by interpreting the paintings done on paper by the street children. This went online on web. Since M F Hussain had agreed to come and could not at the last minute, the response to his last-minute cancellation has been interpreted in a 'Hussain feature' and is being put up on the web.as well, along with a critical elaboration of Hussain's work by art writer Meher Pestonjee.

Though the site was launched with the above event, we expect the site to be an interesting place to discover and exchange notes on colors. We have also created this site with the view that it will extend and grow with suggestions from people who are accessing it. The town has had a long and varied history. There are remnants of Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman occupations, but it wasn't until the Moors arrived that the town began to flourish. After the Christian re-conquest of 1488 Mojacar continued to thrive, although the situation was reversed in the mid-nineteenth century when the area was racked by droughts and the population declined. It wasn't until the 1960's that Mojacar began to recover after it became home to a colony of artists and writers. Every season brings along new festivals, each a true celebration of the bounties of the rich traditions followed for time immemorial. That's not all! The birthdays of Gods and Goddesses, saints and prophets, great historical happenings and the advent of the New Year, all find expression in colorful festivities. The same festival, though celebrated differently in the various parts of the country, exhibits an eternal harmony of the spirit of celebration.

Packed with fun and excitement, festivals serve as an occasion to clean and decorate houses, to get together with friends and relatives and to exchange gifts. New attire, dance, music and rituals- all add to their joyful rhythm. It is a time for prayer, for pageantry and procession…a time to rejoice, in celebration of life.

Bihu - Assam

Bihu or Bohag Bihu is the biggest festival of the people of Assam. It is a festival that transcends all religious and class barriers bringing people together in a free and uninhabited manner. The Assamese observe not one but three Bihus. Bohag Bihu, which is celebrated in mid-April, the Magh Bihu, which is held in mid-January, and the Kati Bihu which is celebrated in mid-October. The three are connected with the spring, winter and autumn seasons respectively.

The first day of Bohag Bihu is known as the 'Goru Bihu' and is reserved for cattle rites. Household is cleaned, the cows feet are washed, oil rubbed on their horns and hooves and some times they are decorated with garlands.

The next day is 'Manuh Bihu' day; on this day homage is paid to elders, relatives and friends. The Bihu meal is a special one consisting of Chira, curds and sweets.

The third day of Bihu is sometimes called the 'Gosain Bihu' and is set apart for religious services. Games and sports, special Bihu songs and dances, Fairs etc are a part of the Bihu celebrations. These Bihu songs are beautiful specimens of folk poetry set to lilting music and swinging rhythm. The Bihu dance is a vigorous, captivating dance reflecting the spirit of youth and vitality.

Bikaner Festival - Bikaner - Rajasthan

Dedicated to the indispensable ship of the desert, the festival starts off with a magnificent procession of bedecked camels. It is a colourful spectacle of the beautifully decorated camels that fascinates the onlookers with their charm and grace. Several competitions are held, marked with typical Rajasthani colour, joyous music and lilting rhythms and gay festivities.

Budh Purnima - All over India

Buddha Poornima, which falls on the full moon night in the month of Vaisakha (either in April or May), commemorates the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, founder of Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world. Notwithstanding the summer heat (the temperature routinely touches 45 degrees C), pilgrims come from all over the world to Bodh Gaya to attend the Buddha Poornima celebrations. The day is marked with prayer meets, sermons on the life of Gautam Buddha, religious discourses, continuous recitation of Buddhist scriptures, group meditation, processions, worship of the statue of Buddha and symposia. Champakkulam Boat Race - Kerala

The traditional annual boat race of Kerala begin in July at Champakulam. This festival is known as ' Moolam Vallamkali'. Moolam signifies a Malayalam asterism (star or Nakshathram), Moolam of the month Mithunam.

Chennai Dance & Music Festival - Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Chennai music and dance festival is a celebration of classical music and dance of South India (Carnatic Music) held during mid December to mid January in the capital city of Chennai. The festival is held at a number of venues around the city by various sabhas or organizations.

The 'Margazhi festival of dance and music' started early back in 1927, to commemorate the anniversary of Madras Music Academy every December was later adopted by various organizations which held art festivals in different parts of the city.

Diwali - the origin

According to Ramayana, Diwali commemorates the return of Ram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the eldest son of King Dasharath of Ayodhya, from his 14-year exile with Sita and Lakshman after killing the Ravan, a demon king. The people of Ayodhya illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and fireworks to celebration of the return of their king. Continuing the story of Rama, this festival commemorates Lord Ram's return to his kingdom Ayodhya after completing his 14-year exile. Twinkling oil lamps or diyas light up every home and firework displays are common all across the country. This celebration took place on the night of the new moon of Ashwin (October-November). The tradition and the timing continued to be followed even these days.

Deepavali, the literal meaning of which in Sanskrit is 'a row of lamps.' Filling little clay lamps with oil and wick and lighting them in rows all over the house is a tradition that is popular in most regions of the country. One of the most curious customs, which characterizes this festival of Diwali, is the indulgence of gambling, especially on a large scale in North India.

Deepavali is a festival where people from all age groups participate. They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting near and dear ones to their households for partaking in a sumptuous feast. The lighting of lamps is a way of paying obeisance to god for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valor and fame.
It is one time in the whole year that children volunteer to leave their beds long before the day begins. In fact, the traditional oil bath at 3 a.m, is the only chore that stands between them and the pre-dawn adventures. They emerge, scrubbed clean to get into their festive attire, and light up little oil lamps, candles and scented sticks(agarbathis), the wherewithal for setting alight crackers and sparklers.
